Medical Thoracoscopy and VATS Hands-On-Wetlab

Thoracoscopy is an extremely useful technique for diagnosis as well as treatment of chest diseases. It is especially important for a country like India with huge load of chest patients. Unfortunately, it is practiced by very few doctors in India.

Prof. (Dr.) Arvind Kumar has taken upon himself the task of popularizing this technique across the country and also training surgeons and pulmonologists in the art and science of this technique.

Towards this aim, with the support of Karl Storz Company, Prof Kumar has been organizing one-day hands-on workshops on "Medical Thoracoscopy and VATS."

The format is as follows: Didactic lectures of 3-4 hours duration with Q-A session

Hands on Training on dead animal Chest tissues performing diagnostic Thoracoscopy, Pleural biopsy and Lung biopsy.

Each of the workshop was attended by over 50 participants.

The didactic lectures are followed by hands-on session, wherein the participants get a chance to do Thoracoscopy on goat carcass, simulating the OT environments. They not only learn how to handle the camera and telescope, but also to do pleural biopsy, lung biopsy, and pleurodesis.

These workshops are dedicated to revolutionizing patient care through the development of endoscopic intervention for chest diseases, which is emerging from the development of new endovision equipment along with hand instruments. This will enable surgeons and pulmonologists to offer less invasive diagnostic and therapeutic options for a variety of thoracic disorders.
